2019 GfGD Annual Conference on Earth Science, Health and Wellbeing
Our 7th Annual Conference, hosted at The Geological Society explored the role of the Earth sciences in helping to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3, ensuring ‘Good Health and Well-being’.
We were joined by nearly one hundred conference delegates from a range of backgrounds, from undergraduate students to private sector attendees to volunteers from other charities.
Our speakers delivered insightful talks exploring a range of topics and perspectives in geo-health.
Professor Jane Entwistle from Northumbria University spoke about her research into lead in allotment soils and dust in our homes, and Professor Claire Horwell of Durham University told us about her research into volcanic ash and the use of facemasks in managing this hazards.
Kevin Blanchard (Director of DRR Dynamics) spoke about the importance of inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction, and Ilan Kellman from University College, London spoke about the impacts of climate change on mental health.
The diversity of topics, speakers, and themes explored led for some really engaging and exciting discussions in breakout sessions.
One of the highlights of the conference was the series of nano-presentations given by GfGD University Groups, which covered a range of topics including fluoride in groundwater and asbestos minerals.
Honor James, Rebecca Primiceri, and Rachael Sims delivered the winning nano-presentation on the minerals used in medical technologies, which was a particularly interesting and insightful talk.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to our sponsors the European Federation of Geologists, the Society for Environmental Geochemistry, Geological Survey Ireland, and the Institute of Geologists of Ireland for supporting our conference, and to the Geological Society of London for providing an excellent conference venue.
