Partnerships
We work in partnership with diverse organisations around the world, in line with the ethos of the Sustainable Development Goals. To find out more about working with us, please get in touch.
We are an affiliated organisation of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), with a shared aim of advancing international geoscience cooperation to serve society. Through active engagement in IUGS activities we work to put sustainable development at the heart of the global geoscience community, and champion the importance of geoscience to diverse international organisations.
We are a project partner on the IUGS/UNESCO International Geoscience Programme Project 685 - Geoscience for Sustainable Development (GeoSD). UNESCO is the only United Nations organisation with a mandate to support research and capacity-building in geology and geophysics, and the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) is its flagship international engagement platform, in collaboration with the IUGS. The IGCP mission includes promoting sustainable use of natural resources, advancing new initiatives related to geo-diversity and geo-heritage and geohazards risk mitigation. The IGCP promotes collaborative projects with a special emphasis on the benefit to society, capacity-building, and the advancement and sharing of knowledge between scientists with an emphasis on North-South and South-South cooperation.
We have a partnership agreement with the International Association for Promoting Geoethics, working together to promote geoethics as an important consideration for all when contributing to sustainable development. We actively contribute to IAPG meetings and publications, and are a signatory to the Cape Town Statement of Geoethics.
We are proud to be a member of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) Blog Network, joining in 2012. This partnership advances our strategic objective of promoting the value of geology in supporting sustainable development, providing a platform to share articles and news with a diverse audience of geoscientists and the general public.
We partner regularly with the Geological Society of London, with a shared strategic ambition of promoting social and environmental sustainability, responsibility and stewardship. The Society have hosted our annual conferences since 2013, and we have co-published resources with them and the British Geological Survey on ‘Geology and the Sustainable Development Goals’.
We partner with the Gesina Initiative for Geosciences Sustainability (GIGS), fostering advancements in geoscience for sustainable development across Nigeria and West Africa. This partnership taps into GIGS's robust network within the African geoscience community and GfGD's global expertise, to champion initiatives that promote responsible resource management and capacity-building. Together, we are committed to enhancing geoscience education, policy engagement, and cross-sector collaboration, contributing to sustainable natural resource use and risk mitigation in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
